Artist Bio
Kara Mercer was born in Clinton Maryland . Very early on Kara decided that Art was her passion and thrive to develop her skill. Her artistic abilities were enhanced in high school where she focused on portraits and illustrations . Kara also found a passion for Black Women and volunteered her time with nonprofit organizations such as National Council For Negro Women and the Sister of the Nia. It was then where she decided that she wanted to use her skills to uplift African American Women.
After being accepted into the Maryland Institute College of Art ,Kara dedicated more of her time through arts and volunteering within the Baltimore Community. She joined the Black Student Union and participate in multiple protests along with volunteering with a food drives. She also participated in a group exhibition that was curated by the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Diversity Program .
Inspired by the women in her community , Kara found the correlation between religion and older African American Maternal figures. Like the Madonna , Black grandmothers are synonymous with the black church. With this in mind , Kara creates narratives that immortalize Black Grandmothers as religious iconography. While painting and collages are her primary medium , Kara has also experience with film and creative writing.
